Guess who’s back? Back from the brink – yes!

Posted on November 11, 2017

I'm back, still coeliac, still embittered about the price of food and my climbing back on the saddle and being ejected again, but I'm in recovery. Never go back. They should be words tattooed on my knuckles, implanted on my brain, and nailed to every school door in this nasty Nazi county. But stupidly, two years ago, I went back. Went back to teach and it was more toxic than a full meal of gluten. This time though, it didn't take ...

Right, how to choose – cocaine or buy gluten free?

%name cocaine

Another fiscal rant from glutenfreeself. It seems to be de rigeur at the moment to be looking at one's own finances when the nation's leader is under similar scrutiny. (more…)

Norwich – the gluten free equivalent of Ludlow?

Posted on January 2, 2016

So news breaks today that the owners of the Gluten Free shop in Norwich have branched out on Timberhill and opened a gluten free cafe. In our 7 years here, Norwich seems to have become the coeliac equivalent of Shropshire's Ludlow. So let's have a meal journey round the city. The usual suspects - Costa, Starbucks, Sainsburys, Morrisons, M and S, Asda, Waitrose all stock gluten free sandwiches in and around Norwich. Yo Sushi - very good ...

Retirement! Escape! C’est fin!

Posted on December 18, 2015

Today, I've left teaching for good. Yes, not a false dawn, an empty threat. No one will tempt me back. It's finished. Over. Dead to me. After Christmas, glutenfreeself is retired from the classroom, perhaps a bit prematurely at 50, but it's time to wave my bat and walk back to the pavilion. It's been a cruel two years since I fell off the saddle in November 2013. I've climbed back on but been ejected here in Salem County. Bitter? ...

I'm beginning to wonder about coffee. I've always avoided instant coffee since diagnosis of coeliac disease as I've read about hidden gluten somewhere in the depths of Google, but even freshly ground coffee - whether made at home or from Starbucks, Costa or independents - is beginning to have gluten like effects. And before anyone suggests it's the chocolate sprinkles - no I don't have this on cappuccinos, ever. But something is amiss ...

Day 43

Posted on November 12, 2015

In a fit of wellbeing, I opted to stay Sober for October and with smug satisfaction, extended the teetotalism to November or Movember. It's been quite a challenge, mainly because I attended the gluten free expo at the Forum in Norwich and several stands were allowing gluten free beer tasting. Damn. Every cloud though. Being sober for 43 days and counting has made the bathroom scales smile not scowl at me, and I have enjoyed seeing my ...

When is gluten free not gluten free?

Posted on October 5, 2015

When is gluten free not gluten free? Okay short post but one that I need to express. I was a bit perturbed last week to be made ill by a Free From product, an own brand gluten free muesli from one of the big supermarkets - the one beginning with A. Now I know oats can cause an allergic reaction as they're often grown and processed near wheat products and Avenin can cause problems for coeliacs. But a product labelled gluten free ...
